Canadian mobile money venture Zoompass to offer international remittances

Enstream, the Canadian telco-led m-commerce joint venture is partnering with Western Union to deliver cross-border money transfer options to Zoompass mobile money users.

With the launch of the service later this year, Zoompass users in Canada will be able to send funds directly from their mobile wallets. Recipients will be able to pick up their cash at more than 380,000 Western Union Agent locations in 200 countries and territories.

Cross-border mobile-to-mobile transfers will also be available via Western Union alliance partners Globe Telecom and Smart Communications in the Philippines. Read more

EXIM Bank opens second exchange house in Canada

Export Import Bank of Bangladesh Limited opened its own exchange house 'Exim Exchange Company (Canada) Ltd' at Toronto, Canada Saturday.

This exchange house, registered with Canadian regulator FINTRAC, is a compliant official money transfer channel to serve Bangladeshi expatriates working and living in Canada.

The Chairman of the bank Mr. Md. Nazrul Islam Mazumder inaugurated the exchange house at Danforth Road in Toronto. Yakub Ali, Bangladesh high commissioner in Canada was present as special guest on the occasion.

"EXIM ventures to explore this new and potential arena of remittance as a first Bangladeshi private bank. Following the launching of its second exchange house, our bank cherishes the vision of being a major force in the country's remittance influx eyeing upon countries with a large number of Bangladeshi expatriates," Managing Director of EXIMBank Kazi Masihur Rahman told FE. Remittance Trends in Canada

Recently new government data showed that about 4 in 10 Canadians wire money back home to family and/or friends. The majority of these funds are going to the Philippines and Haiti.

Of the immigrants who entered Canada during 2000-2001, 41 percent say they have sent money at least once in their first your years, according to Canadian statistics. The average amount sent was $2,500 within the first two years and $2,900 within 2-4 years.

This government data, the first to measure the activity of remittances in Canada, comes just as remittances are flourishing across the globe. For countries such as Lesotho, Haiti, and Jordan remittances comprise almost one-third of the gross domestic product. Other countries include Jamaica, the Philippines, and the Dominican Republic, according to the World Bank Figures. [Read more]
